Tubeway Extrusions specialises in the manufacture of high-quality rigid PVC extrusions, supplied as made-to-order production runs or from our extensive range of stocked profiles.
As part of our manufacturing process at our Ipswich facility, we generate production offcuts and waste material. Rather than sending this material to landfill, more than 95% is recycled and processed into quality regrind material for reuse.
This approach not only reduces waste and supports more sustainable manufacturing practices, but also creates a cost-effective raw material that can offer significant savings when compared to virgin PVC. Where suitable for the application, we’re able to pass these savings on to our customers.
To maintain quality and consistency, Tubeway only uses recycled material generated from our own manufacturing operations. We do not purchase third-party recycled material, as we cannot verify its original composition, contamination levels or previous processing history.
Considerations When Using Recycled uPVC
While recycled uPVC can be an excellent solution for many applications, it does have some limitations when compared to virgin material:
- It is generally slightly less elastic than virgin PVC.
- The surface finish can occasionally appear more grainy, making it less suitable for highly cosmetic applications.
- Repeated processing can reduce the effectiveness of certain additives, which may affect long-term colour stability in direct sunlight.
- Mixed-colour regrind can result in colour variation or streaking within the finished profile. For applications requiring a more consistent appearance, dark colours or black can often be produced using masterbatch colourants at a modest additional cost.
- Clear recycled material is available, although it tends to be more brittle than its virgin equivalent.
Typical Applications
Recycled plastic is particularly well suited to applications where performance and value are prioritised over cosmetic appearance.
Common uses include:
- Protective transit packaging for products such as doors, panels and other high-value goods.
- Profiles used underground or as hidden components where appearance is not important.
- Extrusions where low material cost is a key consideration.
- Applications where moisture resistance is required and alternative materials, such as cardboard, would be unsuitable.
A Sustainable and Cost-Effective Solution
Products manufactured from recycled uPVC can often be recycled again at the end of their service life, provided they remain free from excessive contamination and are used within the recognised limitations of the material.
